Ilona's Story

Life We left St. Jean in'63 and moved to Pierrefonds. I went to Beaconsfield High - graduated in'67. On to Concordia - didn't quite finish. Met my first husband Gordie there. He's also from St. Jean, but moved there the year after we left. We divorced 7-1/2 years later. Met husband #2, Michael, in 1976 and had 2 children - Carissa and Sebastian. I'm presently a homemaker. I was helping my daughter with her children - two boys, Quennel and Quirin, while she was studying at McGill and working. She graduated with a Master of Social Work Degree in November 2006. She had several job offers and started working even before she graduated. We are very proud of her. The boys still come to my house after school and Carissa picks them up after work. They are growing so fast. Quennel is already in high school. Sebastian went back to school and is studying to be a mechanic. He has finished the school part and is now doing his "stage". He is a great mechanic - hardworking and honest. I volunteer at Batshaw Youth and Family Centre. I'm the secretary of the User Committee there and I belong to the Multi-racial, Multicultural Committee. We've always had pets. We've lived in LaSalle since 1976. My parents still live in Pierrefonds and still have the same phone number. How's that for stability!!! School St. Johns High was a great place to go. When I started school in St. Jean, the elementary school was located near the Marina. When we moved into the...Expand for more
new building I was in grade 5. It was real excitement. I have mostly good memories of my years there. We had the best teachers - dedicated, hard working and caring people. It's hard to find that kind of teacher today. Grade 5 was Mrs. Adams - she was like a second mom to us all. Grade 6 was Mrs. Hulshoff - she was tough and demanding - brought out the best efforts in all of us. Grade 7 was Charlie Johnson - we joked around a lot and teased him because of his lack of hair, but he took it all in stride and made us work hard and learn well. I hated to leave and cried all summer, except when I went to Granby to stay with Marianne Bauer. That was fun. Started a few summer romances too. :) Grade 8 started out at Beaconsfield High School. There were so many students there we had to go in two shifts. On the first day of school, I met what would be one of my best friends, Francina Cunnington. Let's not forget David Liddiard, who asked me to my first prom and Alvin York and Bob Parsons - really good friends. There were some crazy times there, but mostly good times. I couldn't have picked a better school - although having to go there and home via the school bus was not ideal. I was fortunate to have had some really great teachers there too. I've been to all the reunions. The next one is scheduled for Fall of 2008. It's great to see everyone and amazing to learn how we have all spread out to so many different cities, provinces and even countries.
